Ideal for taking the school governors home :)

Ok, so after we've all had a good giggle and a pissing contest on who has the best (read - most expensive!) bike....what would you good people recommend for say £1500 ?

Would that get something decent enough ?

Steve, get measured for a bike, the fit will denote the geometry you should be looking for. You will be able to get a decent bike at that price point, last years £2k bikes are at that point for new ones.

Go along to a good bike shop and spend time, test riding etc

I asked the same question last year......

I looked at £750 and spent more than twice that :(

Years ago (when I was 16!!) a had a custom made bike from Rick Green Cycles (near Wilmslow) - a RIXON frame, then had all the obligatory Campagnolo group set / Mavic rims / Carbon LOOK pedals etc etc. It was made to measure and was very comfortable. Are custom frames still favoured or not the thing anymore?

I know you said not a Mountain Bike Moz but I do have a rather special Marin in my garage!:)

LOL, no I dont want to buy it back Chalkie!....I dont like full suspension :finger (hence you bought it a very knock down price my friend!) :)

Someone will correct no doubt. The frames today have moved on from bits of welded aluminium and steel, today all these esoteric materials titanium, scandium (used in Russian sub launched missiles) and of course carbon. These require specialist knowledge to construct. Certainly the CF frames require a very special skill for the weave etc.

Mine's got a hybrid carbon steel/carbon fibre makeup, Glenn's and my wife's are totally carbon so things have move on quite a bit :)

As Damian said, get a basic fitting service done first to make sure you end up with the right size frame etc. Shouldn't cost more than about £30, and is a reasonable starter. You can spend hundreds of pounds on fitting, if you want to be exact, but this extreme, and a waste of money unless you are truly serious.

Once you know the frame size, go and ride a few bikes see what you like. Shame you didn't decide to buy one a month or so earlier, as you could have picked up an 06 model with big discount, although not impossible, unlikely they will still be available.

Also, take Glenn up on his offer as you will get carried away....

Steve, I was in Total Bike in Swindon this morning and they have a Blue Pinarello Paris Alu for £2k, was £3.2k size 54cm - lovely bike - not sure if that is too small for you? I know they will do a better deal - the manager Jason is leaving soon!

Turns out that a 54cm in the Pinarello is closer to a 56cm in a standard bike - I am not sure how tall you are but it is worth while calling them.

The Frame alone is £1800 retail, with Campagnola Chorus groupset.

15-16lbs for a full bike?!

My frame weighs 9.1lbs and the full bike around 37!

Its designed for going down hills rather than up though :)

Steve, If you call through Reading at all then try AW Cycles on the Henley Road. They have a huge Roadie section (upstairs) and are damn good when it comes to doing custom specced builds for your budget.

I really think he should be looking at Carbon for that kind of money...who would even pay £3.2k for a Alu bike these days:confused:

Pinarellos are very nice (especially to look at) but you are paying a lot for the name...

As said, i think the money would be better spent on a spec or Scott Carbon frame, as they would present better VFM IMO...

My Lemond is like that, 57cm which is closer to 59-60cm on a standard geometry.....again just shows how important fitment is :)

Ok, another option - Litespeed Titanium frame with full Dura Ace for 2k - spec completely flexible.
