In three months at work I've drunk

I am drinking a latte whilst reading this...:(

That's a pretty good time mate...

I've started going to the gym, build myself up to what I used to do which was 2000m on the rower (slats closed) in 7:43....

I did it the other night but only 1000m in 4:40...have to try harder.

Steve,

Got these few tips for you mate

Just remember to set the incline at 1% to represent the difference for wind resistance not felt on the treadmill

Your body needs to be able to find your pace on it's own. I would recommend running at least the long run and possibly a mid week run on the roads. You could mix it up, long run this week, mid week next week..

Kurgen, whats the difference between street & treadmill anyway - km's against time is surely the same ?

Chris, I tend to do variable cycles mate. Longer distances at 1%, some variable hillly stuff, speedwork etc etc. I never run at less than 1%, the handbook makes that clear - besides if you run at 0% its bad for your knee's I heard. I run twice a day as I get bored doing long stints....will be on there again this evening. And when my knee's start hurting I will get on the low impact cross trainer instead :)

Chris, my problem is lifestyle - I like to go mad at the weekends. I love eating out and drinking as much booze as humanly possible on Fri/Sat nights.

So, I have 2 options:

1. Become a fat twat like I was from the age of 21-31 again, but enjoy the lifestyle

2. Bust my bollox on the treadmill etc every friggin night, so I can still get bolloxed at the weekends!!

I aint giving up the lifestyle, so fruit & soup all week + gym pain it is :)

It's worked for you chap....so that's great, I just need to find my balance now...all a bit one sided at the moment...

Interesting mention of treadmills and knee problems - I've just spent 2 hrs down Stoke Mandeville hospital this morning and it turns out I have damaged my knee ligaments (I think through running on my treadmill) and have been told to take painkillers and keep off running for 3-6 weeks while it repairs itself. I was running 5miles per evening up until this morning and now it looks like I'll just have to resort to being a fat bastard again.

James, ANY sort of running is going to give your knee's a hard time - its high impact

Some say treadmills are actually better for your knee's because they have some spring in them wherea's the road doesnt.

Either way, if you are going to start hammering your knee's after years of being a great big stodgy lump of useless fat lard, then they are going to get the hump and complain.

Get a good physio to come up with some non running exercises that will help build up the muscles that support your knee joint.

Also, when my knee's fell apart I bought a proper professional cross trainer - which works you out like mad (it works more muscles than a treadmill in actual fact) and is low impact (almost no impact really).

So, when you have been overdoing it a bit - you just jump on the cross trainer and carry on exercising until your knee's repair.

Also, I dont know if this is bollox or not (but it seems to work for me) - but get into protein drinks as they help keep your muscles strong and repair themselves quicker after training (and they are like yummy scrummy McDonalds milkshakes too which is a right brucey bonus)

The thing is Steve - I've been running daily for 6 months now so I would imagine the muscles are up to scratch down there. I suspect I may have landed and twisted the knee a little and ignoring it just compounded things. Yes, a protein shake is not a bad idea - I have a ton of the stuff (chocolate flavour.. yum)

EDIT: A cross trainer is something I may have to look at (even if you do look like a fag on them)

James, you have a load of muscles around your knee's to support them that are not strengthened with running - so you may well of built up good muscle definition in the core running muscles in your legs - but if the muscles around your knee structure are weak, running wont help. A trip to the gym on certain machines will help strengthen the core muscles around your knee.

Friggin hell... it's like having Mr Motivator in the house this is ! :)

Has anyone got a cross trainer they wanna sell - me and dave really need one!
Despite getting him a rowing machine for his birthday last year and a bike for xmas, he has only used both of them twice each!!!!
I cant really use the rowing machine cos my back has been proper fooked since I had emma and it buggers my back up something rotten! Plus Im not that good on my bike as I only learnt to ride when I was 13 so I keep slipping (and with emma in her baby seat on the back I think I need a bit of practise before I go out again!)
So an elliptical it is then!!!
