The old "insurance at the 'Ring" topic again

For years I've been with Direct Line or BMW Insurance... and their policies didn't SPECIFICALLY exclude the Nordschleife from their policies.

The last year or so however I've been with Admiral and just noticed they specifically exclude cover from the Nordschleife.

Anyone got any thoughts/ideas... Direct Line are more money and want a tracker, that and I just bloody know if I change back to Direct Line they'll probably now have an exclusion in their policy.

Did find this in a Google search... EVO Mag http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/238978/nrburgring_insurance.html

Think there was an ombudsman ruling a little while ago that covers this grey area of not specifically excluding the Ring. Basically it means you cannot use this as a valid claim anymore. All that your insurer has to do is pay out any third party but they can still chase you personally to recover their loss.

Best way forward if you want cover is to do it properly through Pace Ward or another specialist who can specifically include cover for driving at the Ring.

Total minefield now so beware.

If you want to drive the NS in anger, get specific one-off policies that cover.
Otherwise, just drive it for fun and take it easy.
It's not worth pushing it hard on the NS.

Its fairly simple really:

No UK insurer will insure you on a TF at the ring.

The thing is no one wants to talk about it. And no one at the ring wants to deal with the issue either. They know that the vast majority of UK owners out there have no insurance (it has even be mentioned to the owners) but no one wants to discuss it.

100% with you Ade, I've been quite a few times in the past (Bikes & Cars) and never drive with anything but a lot in reserve, just not worth it. I'm booked on a trackday at Spa the following Monday where I'll let my hair down a bit more where it's much quieter and there's some decent run off (and an ambulance on standby!)

Might give Pace Ward a call... isn't there someone on here that "is" PW ?

You can get insurance for Track Days at the ring but no one covers TF Touristenfahrten days

Try Pace Ward or Competition Car Insurance

no one will insure me anywhere for enough cover . i can get 125 000 gbp . its not enough for the cgt . any ideas ?

If one individual insurer is prepared to give £125k of cover for a set premium and excess, then surely a switched on broker could get a syndicate together to offer the total cover required between 2 or 3 insurers ???

We used to do syndicating on residual values, we called it "Top slicing" whereby the primary lender underwrote the risk on the RV to x but we needed x+Y+Z to make the deal stack up. So they syndicated the top slice out for a premium. If it sold for over the raised RV's the top slicers got a bigger % of the income as they took the bigger risk etc.

Same could be applied to track day insurance for the CGT surely ? It is only "Risk & Reward" after all.

As Nathan430 thread, get all your cars registered in Germany then Nordschilefe has to be covered, just a bit of a balls ache

Things can still go wrong no matter how easy you are driving.

I went last time with no insurance, I thought take it easy so I'd be ok, but somebody pointed out to me, what if power steering hose failed, dumped a load of oil on the track, next person behind was a biker and he ended up going off/ending up in hospital for months or even worse, paralysed, how would I pay for that???? Made me think twice about going uninsured again!

Same, seen too many bikers down, too many closures.

Track days at the 'ring are the way to go! And Moris cover most cars 1st party for the track days, apparently they've stopped covering TF though which is a shame.

Unfortunately on TF days, experience and skill are no guarantee of leaving unscathed any more. Too many knobbers, too many shit box cars and just too much traffic. Slow bikes are a mega liability for anyone with reasonable pace too. Have witnessed too many near misses with fast cars cut up by slow bikers wobbling around not knowing the line. With all the blind high speed sections the risk is massive when you think about it. Only sensible way for us Brits to enjoy the place is on a private track day, with no bikes. Ironically, they tried a few years back, to split bikes and cars and it actually led to even more biker carnage than before. They soon reverted to the mixed TF days.

Baf,
who cares about insuring one's car, it is the expense of the liability if you are held liable for the death of another participant which matters? That is why we must have UK organisers organising track days at the NS according to UK rules, i.e. each for his own risk
