Morning.

This should have been a nice easy job. Brand new car, 100 odd mile... you would have thought a car this new wouldn't need much polishing.

Well I started off with the usual wash regime. Wheels sprayed with acid free wheel cleaner and scrubbed in and out with different brushes to get right to the back of the wheel and then pressure rinsed off before moving to the next wheel.

Then onto the pre wash and the car was covered in meguairs hyperwash foam which was left to dwell for 5 mins. This helps soften any dirt on the car making it easier to pressure rinse it off before shampooing.

The idea is then to pressure rinse the dirt off... not just rinse the foam away.. so work quite slowly with the pressure washer and have the nozzle about 6-12 inches away from the car.

The car was then carefully shampooed, rinsed and dried.

Once inside and under the lights it was clear this would need a little more work than the usual new car protection detail.

Buffer trails, random scratches, swirls, wet sanding marks on every panel meant it took 2 whole days to complete this job. None of the marks were as bad as I have seen on new Aston Martins but appeared quite faint (although the hard paint meant that even a faint mark was very difficult to remove!)... but all the faint marks just left the car looking a bit 'dull' under direct lighting.

With all the polishing FINALLY complete the car was taken back outside and rinsed to remove all the polishing dust and then the paint was sealed with Blackfire paint sealant and then given 2 coats of Zymol Vintage wax. The wheels and all the carbon fibre in the engine bay were sealed with high temp metal sealant. Glass was sealed with RainX. Interior carbon fibre was also waxed and the interior was vacuumed.

i like that.
good job!

I want mine done soon. problem is where i keep the porsche there is a huge amount of building work going on. within a day of cleaning the shole car is covered with dust!

Nice

Can I just ask your advice on something - what is the best pressure hose available (kids have broken my old one)?
The thing I always found on my old one was that the hose attachment was always too short and the power wasn't that high

lovely - can't beat lambo's for drama. can't wait to get back into one.

Doug - a Karcher K 5.700 is what you need.

Actually looks new when youve finished, great job.
If I had one it would have to be 2 wheel drive and manual box :yeah:

You would love it Cem. Very good on track once you get it setup properly...and awesome on the road. Great ownership experience. Sensory overload.

Hmm.

There are millions of Karcher pressure washers .. that one is over £300

I assume the more you pay the higher pressure you get / less likely to overheat? Anything particularly wrong with the £50 or £100 Karcher washers you can get in Tesco or Costco?

I believe the more expensive ones are water cooled so the motor should last alot longer. Probably worth spending a little more and avoiding the dirt cheap ones.

Ta.

Any issues with using a pressure washer at a close distance to the body and actually damaging the paintwork? Think there was a thread a couple of years ago with some concerns about this, given how thin paint is now compared to a decade ago.

Years ago, I pressure washed by first car which was a 1979 Ford Escort and the paint started coming off ! :scared:

I'm not sure it is related to the depth of paint but the bond it has with the primer (and the primer with the metal). My reasoning is that, if the depth of paint was an issue you'd be stripping top layers regardless. I don't think it's a very good idea to be holding a pressure washer nozzle too close to the paintwork, just in case ! (I think if there is a particularly stubborn substance on the paint it's probably better to clay it)

James.

With the Lambo the washer was as close as 6" :dontknow:

I think the thread was on a Civic Type R forum, and the paint there is no worse or better than any other car of the same price range....

One would assume that the paint/primer and primer/metal bonds ought to be pretty good these days? I don't know.

I'm not really knowledged up when it comes to pressure washers.
But I assue there should be some pressure regulator.
I would imagine that you want it set fairly low and that you need a good spray, rather than a jet of high pressure water.
A jet of water a 10 bar 2 inches from the car will knacker it.

You can look in your handbook. It warns against pressure washing too close.
If there are any paint chips it will get under the paint.
It is also supposed to be bad to high pressure wash the tyres.

I'm not sure there is much wrong with a garden hose with a decent head on it.

I'd save the jet wash for cleaning the path.

That's what I have always done, but then most of the professional details seem to use pressure washers. I appreciate there will be some skill in properly using a polishing machine, but beyond common sense, I don't think that is the case with a pressure washer. It is just a matter of how close is too close.

Thanks to Nathan for a fantastic job on my new SL. His dedication and attention to detail are outstanding and the finish on the car is now superb.

When it became apparent to him that the car would need more than a day to sort he volunteered to come back on Saturday and didn't finish until well past 7pm.

For anyone who wants some crappy Italian factory paint sorting out, I can't recommend him highly enough!

I always use a pressure washer, at close range to paint, never had any problem on any car.

Garden hose will not cut it for removing dirt, so when you do wash, instant swirls. Foam then pressure wash is definitely the best option, in my experience.

Cheers Jay and Thanks Peter for the kind words. Disappointing to have to spend so long on a new car from your perspective I'm sure and sorry for taking so long.

Really loved the car though. I've always thought myself a porsche fan but if i were ever fortunate enough to have the money I'd be really REALLY tempted by a lambo now!

Regarding the pressure washer... I use a kranzle 10/120. It was about £400 and they are more heavy duty than the karcher ones you can get in halfords for under £200... where the seals wear out and motors burn out within about 50 hrs use.

.... that said I've had my kranzel 2 years and just had to replace the oil seals and a metal plate (some part around the motor casing that had a fracture in it) so £100-£200 on a 'budget' pressure washer and then just replace it every year or so would probably work out just as cheap / expensive??

I also use a nice 20m pressure hose so i dont have to move the pressure washer but i can get all round the car with the lance.

Regarding pressure. This is only running 130psi and putting through 10l per minute (the more litres per minute the larger the water droplets the more the force of course). You can safely put you hand in the water jet at 6 inches and never heard or seen domestic pressure washer like this causing damage. I guess if you got a big commercial one used for cleaning concrete it might be a different matter ???

Just be carefull not to hit the car with the end of the lance though and its my belief you will be fine.
