Autoblog: Classified Find of the Day: Robocop 3 Ford Taurus cop car

Filed under: Time Warp, Etc., Ford

There was a Robocop 3? Apparently so, but it appears to have gone directly to video. The most memorable thing from the Robocop franchise, at least for us, were the Taurus police cars. They featured prominently in all of the installments, 3 included. Now for those of us who had the AMT/Ertl kit (I had the SHO cop car, not the Robo 1), you can pick up the real thing. This isn't just a hand-me-down Taurus that got a rattlecan paintjob, either, but the last surviving automotive cast member from the final installment.

A longing for the movie and TV icon cars of the 1980s seems to be a common dork affliction - witness the fact you can buy flux capacitors and KITT, uh, kits. It takes a special breed to consider spending more on this '88 Taurus than it likely cost new. If you have no problem dropping $20,000 of today's dollars on yesterday's prop, the Volo Auto Museum has your ride. The car is fully documented and carries a George Barris signature (George seems to have signed any and everything...) and several other prop items. There's even a Robocop suit for an extra three grand if you want to go all-out.

Autoblog: Schumi's retired, but he still makes more than you

For a retiree, Michael Schumacher sure has been getting a lot of press lately. If he's not testing prototypes for Ferrari, he's taking on rivals in the Race of Champions or getting in trouble with the fuzz for driving a taxi. But the 7-time world champion is also making an awful lot of money for someone who isn't even working.
Thanks to continued partnerships with some of Schumacher's biggest sponsors, the driving superstar is expected to pull in a staggering €35 million over the next seven years, taking his sponsorship deals through 2014.
Schumi's manager Willi Weber has been hard at work maintaining the commercial relationships with such big sponsors as Shell, Omega and Deutsche Vermogenberatung. At this year's RoC, the champ wore a white, black and orange suit decked out in sponsor's logos instead of the scarlet he wore while driving for Ferrari.

Autoblog: Tata's $2,500 car to be unveiled next month

Tata Motors is expected become the winning bidder for Jaguar and Land Rover in the coming weeks. While the Indian automaker could soon be selling us expensive British luxury cars and SUVs, it's also hard at work developing the world's least expensive car. The cheap car under development is expected to sell for around 100,000 rupees or around $2,500 USD, and we've just learned it will be unveiled early next month at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Unfortunately, that's one auto show not on our itinerary to attend, so we'll have to report of its debut from afar. The car is expected have an engine in the rear powering the rear wheels, four doors and all the creature comforts of an outhouse, we'd presume. While it's likely the car will be exported to other markets outside of India when it goes on sale later in 2008, don't expect to see it in the U.S. as we expect it would fail both our emissions and safety standards with flying colors. Autoblog: Upwardly Mobile: Ferrari edition Motorola Z8

From its headquarters in Maranello, Ferrari has traditionally operated two divisions: one that makes exquisite road cars, and another that competes in motorsports. More recently, however, a third division has emerged, with the responsibility of conducting the company's ever-increasing marketing enterprise. The Global Branding Division itself seems to be following two tracks: licensing products as exclusive as the road cars and targeted towards their owners, and marketing merchandise to the Scuderia's enormous fan base.

Take for example the ever-popular Ferrari wrist watches: the company teamed up with Swiss watchmakers Panerai to offer a line of exquisite timepieces at big prices, all the while offering the common racing fan a less complicated, lower-cost wristwatch. Ferrari appears to be offering branded mobile phones along the same strategy: the company teams up with Vertu to offer exclusive four-figure devices to Ferrari owners, and with Motorola for more cost-effective (but assuredly still plenty pricey) cell phones.

The latest to fit into the strategy is this Ferrari-edition Motorola Z8, complete with red accents and Ferrari logos, and loaded with special content, including videos, ring-tones and wallpapers. For some reason it even comes loaded with "The Bourne Identity" in mobile format.

Prices haven't yet been released, but while the Vertu sells for thousands, the previous Motorola RAZR Maxx V6 Ferrari Challenge retailed for a more manageable $524. The Motorola Z8 Ferrari will be available from Ferrari Stores and select Motorola retailers. Unfortunately for anyone reading this and thinking it would make a great Christmas gift for a certain special someone, it won't be available until after the new year, so consider putting a personal voucher in with the card instead.

Autoblog: Carlsson puts some more class in the M-Class

Filed under: Aftermarket, Tuners, SUVs, Euro, Mercedes Benz

Carlsson has applied its tuning magic to the new M-Class with a host of power, visual, and interior upgrades. Starting with the engine, Carlsson's performance kit for the 320 CDI engine boosts horsepower to 269 and torque to 452 lb-ft, and a new exhaust system with quad tailpipes is also available. The suspension can be upgraded with Carlsson's C-Tronic system that lowers the vehicle 40mm, and 22" 11-spoke wheels help fill the wheel wells even more. A subtle front spoiler and a diffuser-look rear skirt are the only exterior modifications. Interior appointments include alcantara and leather seats, a sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and illuminated door exit lights. Once again, Carlsson proves that sometimes it doesn't take much to make a better Benz.

Autoblog: Racing's biggest playboy is getting married

Not that we'd have any reason to, but if we had to make a list of the world's biggest playboys, Flavio Briatore would certainly rank in the top five. Certainly the biggest in the automotive industry. He's best known as team principal of Renault F1, but the Italian businessman also owns several beach clubs, night clubs and restaurants in Sardinia, Tuscany, Kenya and London, as well as an English football club and, having been a senior director for the Benetton clothing label, has his own fashion line called Billionaire Italian Couture. But business aside, Briatore has dated some of the most famously attractive models in the world, including Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum.
With a little black book like his, it would take some woman to take him off the market, but his latest girlfriend has done just that. Italian lingerie model Elisabetta Gregoraci recently revealed that the couple are engaged to be married at a ceremony - and what's sure to be the party of the century - next May. Flavio is 57, and his fiancé? 27.
So what made Flavio change his gallivanting ways? Briatore recently recovered from cancer, and his girlfriend was there for him the whole way through.

Autoblog: Yamaha drops a 3,000-pound hint on the next V-Max

We really do love us some V-Max, despite the fact that the bike is well past its prime in this day and age of remaking a motorcycle every two years or so. Just because the bike is older than some of our readers doesn't diminish the fact that the V-Max packs a heavy dose of power. It's never easy to remake an icon, so Yamaha is certainly dragging its feet taking its time when it comes to releasing the new Max. The world has seen some hints about what the new bike will look like, but this one is certainly the biggest to date. Weighing a ton and a half, this block of aluminum-plus-V-Max shows how far along in the design process the tuning-fork-company has gotten. According to our source article, the fact that the rear tire is worn might mean that they are testing mules using the new architecture and, most importantly, the new engine. Of course, the heart of Mr. Max has always been the V-Four engine, and we expect that it will continue that way. Still no word on just how powerful the new bike will be, but we would be disappointed if it weren't the fastest thing on two-wheels down the good 'ol 1320.

Autoblog: Schumacher cameos in another kids' movie

While we get all revved up over the revival of Speed Racer in film form, our funny friends in France are gearing up for the remake of their own children's classic, Asterix. The new film, which opens in French theaters next month, is slated to feature cameos by a number of sports figures, including Ferrari stars Michael Schumacher and Jean Todt.
Set in the ancient Roman era, Asterix is a classic series of French children's comic books which has been translated into dozens of languages around the world. The film which, like Speed Racer, is shot with live actors (rather than animated like the original), is called Asterix aux jeux olympiques ("Asterix at the Olympic Games"). Schumacher appears in a seven-minute segment in the movie as a chariot racer called - you guessed it - Schumix, while Todt gives orders from the pit wall...dressed in red, of course. (Hopefully the German authorities won't give Michael a hard time about driving the chariot this time.)
In addition to the Ferrari champions, several other European sports celebrities make cameos in the movie as well, including French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo, retired French soccer player Zinedine Zidane (of World Cup head-butting infamy) and British footballer David Beckham. This is, of course, the second such cameo Schumacher has made, after his appearance in Disney/Pixar's Cars.

The Chicken Little's have arrived: even though there is plenty of hope for sweet electric Mustangs and the like, AutoblogGreen readers heard yesterday that CAFE will make muscle cars an "endangered species". Whatever. How much muscle does the Banks Sidewinder D-Max Type-D have? Plenty, that's how much. It just doesn't spew nasty emissions like older vehicles. Perhaps once the Mythbusters bust the electric car myth next season, all will be better. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Autoblog: Murdered man's authentic KITT up for sale

Filed under: Time Warp, Auction Action

With all this talk about the new Knight Rider and KITT returning as a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, we couldn't ignore this rather bizarre story about an authentic KITT used in the original series that's up for sale on eBay. The car's owner was a wealthy real estate developer named Andrew Kissel who was murdered last year. His killer was never caught, and the administrator of his estate has since been selling his assets to pay off debt. After having thought that all of Kissel's "toys" were sold, the lawyer in charge of his estate found this original 1984 Pontiac Trans Am KITT car used in the TV show. It is literally the last asset of Kissel's estate, and his lawyer has put the car up for auction on eBay Motors. It began with a starting bid of $20,000 and as of writing this is up to $25,100 with five bids. The eBay Motors auction page, however, has caused some to speculate as to whether or not the car is the real deal. There are no pictures of it, it's listed as a "Grand Am" and the lawyer claims he can only fax pictures to interested parties. Despite the dubiousness, the auction appears legit to us, and a resourceful Jalopnik reader did a little research on the VIN that seems to back up that this is the car referred to in news reports. Considering that Kissel reportedly paid $69,000 for the car just two years ago, someone could wind up with a killer bargain on a rare car with a crazy bonus story to boot.

Thanks for the tip, Keith!

Autoblog: OFFICIALLY OFFICIAL: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK

click above image for high-res gallery of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK

The image we showed you yesterday of the facelifted 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK has been proven to be the real deal as the German automaker has officially unveiled the new roadster this morning. As we reported yesterday, the tweaks to the SLK's front end bring it even more in line with the style of an F1 car's nose, for better or worse, while the rear actually gets a cleaner, smoother look with a faux diffuser affixed between the trapezoidal tailpipes. In addition to exterior enhancements, the 2009 model also gets an updated interior with an instrument panel design we actually find appealing and a new three-spoke steering wheel. The availability of "gullwing red" leather for the seats and interior trim that harkens back to the appointments of the original 300 SL is also a nice touch. Two new heavily revised engines join the familiar 5.5L V8 of the AMG model that carries over, including a revised kompressor (supercharged) four-cylinder producing 184 hp/184 lb.-ft of torque and a new 3.5L V6 producing a healthy 305 hp/265 lb.-ft of torque. Both engines also get better fuel economy and emit less CO2 than their predecessors, which is a plus. While a five-speed automatic and six-speed manual are available, we'd opt for the 7G-TRONIC Sport seven-speed automatic to carve up the powerband, and there's a new all-mechanical direct-steer system that seems pretty trick. Pricing for the new SLK, at least in the European market is below.
 • SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR: € 36,503.25
 • SLK 280: € 41,858.25
 • SLK 350 with sports engine: € 46,975.25
 • SLK 55 AMG: € 69,049.75
(incl. VAT in each case)

Autoblog: Lexus LX 570 to cost 9.5% more than the outgoing model

Filed under: Car Buying, SUVs, Lexus, Toyota
lx570.jpg

Lexus has added its bigger, more powerful 5.7L truck engine to its premium SUV, and as a result, the new LX 570 has a bigger price to go along with it. The upscale 'ute's base sticker grows by a knee-wobbling $6,405, starting at a rather monumental $73,800. For those scoring at home, that's about $18,000 more than the Cadillac Escalade, and within $3,000 of the top-end Mercedes GL550. While the LX 570 surpasses the outgoing LX 470 in both power and luxury, a $73,800 price tag is a substantial pill to swallow, even in this admittedly pricey segment.

Autoblog: Saab and Salomon take the Aero X concept to the slopes

It could be their unmistakably Nordic appeal, but if you head to any respectable ski resort, you're likely to see a fair few Saabs with roof-racks in the parking lots, next to Volvo wagons (but very few Koenigseggs). In partnership with winter-sport equipment giant Salomon, Saab has been sponsoring a number of snow-capped alpine events since 2001. Now the two Scandinavian companies have launched a special set of downhill skis in celebration of both their 60th anniversaries, Saab and Salomon having each been founded in 1947.
The fiberglass and graphite skis pay homage to the Saab Aero X concept car unveiled at the 2006 Geneva show. They feature an innovative "hybrid axle" system that put the power down at the rear and optimize turning control at the front. The Salomon Aero X skis sell for $1000 a pair, and the two companies hope to cooperate further in the future, but somehow we don't see a 9-3 wagon running on skis instead of wheels seeing production anytime soon.

Autoblog: Mid-engine Corvette still being considered

Filed under: Trends, Coupes, Supercars, Chevrolet, GM

click above image for high-res gallery of the 2009 Corvette ZR1

The 2009 Corvette ZR1 has arrived, but speculation surrounding the next-generation C7 model and a possible mid-engine variant continue to persist. Bill Visnic from AutoObserver claims that the idea of a mid-engine Vette, either as a variant of the C7 or a replacement of the current front-engine model, is still being discussed by top engineers involved with developing the next iteration of Chevy's iconic sports car. The main argument against the idea of a mid-engine Vette remains the price tag, as costs would drive up the price to above $100,000. While the ZR1 is priming the public for the concept of a $100,000 Corvette, the current base model remains an affordable performance bargain for John Q. Public. If the Corvette switched to a mid-engine platform, the base price for the car itself would be well above $100,000. The other concern is how much a mid-engine Corvette would alienate the car's fan base, which helps drive sales that far exceed more prestigious sport cars in its class (more than 30,000 units so far this year).

While some have argued that a mid-engine layout for the next-gen model would demonstrate the technological prowess of GM's engineers, we'd argue that the ZR1 proves the current layout affords plenty of opportunity to show off the team's skills. Just read Sam's report on the new ZR1 and its LS9 motor and you'll know what we mean. Does anyone out there want a mid-engine Corvette, or is the Corvette team just bogged down by the thought of what it can do rather than what it should?

Autoblog: Congress scrutinizes EPA decision to deny states' rights over regulating em

Any celebration over having passed a new national energy bill with requirements to raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to 35 mpg by 2020 was instantly tempered when the EPA denied the right of California and 16 other states to set their own emissions standards. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger immediately vowed to fight back and sue the EPA over its decision.

It does seem a little odd that after opposing any kind of raise in CAFE standards, the auto industry suddenly got in line and unanimously offered its support for the version of the bill that was passed, especially after the EPA made its decision that seems to favor the interests of the auto industry over protecting the environment.

The situation seems odd enough that Congress has decided to get involved. The House Oversight Committee yesterday requested any and all internal and external communication from the EPA involving the decision it made to deny states the right to set their own emissions standards. The decision itself came down to EPA administrator Stephen Johnson, who some report ignored the unanimous recommendation of his own advisors in turning down California's request.

Read our own analysis after the jump.

Autoblog: Nardelli says Chrysler in a financial jam

Chrysler Chief Executive Robert Nardelli tells a grim tale for the automaker's 2007 financial report. He has informed employees that the company is barreling towards a substantial loss this year. Bankruptcy would be imminent without $10 billion recently received from investors during the Cerberus acquisition. The company is in dire need of increased cash holdings. Nardelli hopes to sell off $1 billon in assets, composed partially of old plants and land, to generate more funds. The Chief Executive also calls for improved vehicle interiors, realistic sales forecasts, production reduction and increased use of overseas suppliers.

While the former Home Depot head was criticized at his old job for hard tactics, he has presented a friendlier side with Chrysler employees, particularly the engineers. It does not seem however, that he has warmed up to the upper management in place. Nardelli has brought in other former Home Depot executives to consult in areas of Chrysler such as HR, marketing and purchasing. This move has caused at least one veteran executive to jump ship. Time will tell if his style is just what the company needs to get back on its feet, though.

Autoblog: Nissan cracks down on illegal GT-R imports

gtr_euro_450.jpg

Grey market vehicles often walk a fine line when it comes to their legality. However, that hasn't deterred some enthusiasts from snatching up a desirable vehicle from one market and moving it to another. These tactics hurt both the auto manufacturer and its dealer network, since grey market vehicles have no warranty coverage. Most automobile companies greatly dislike grey market importation since it increases competition for their own domestic product. They typically utilize every legal resource availabe to them (and they have plenty) to discourage the practice.

You can see where this is going by now. Since the Nissan GT-R is now on sale in Japan, there are some very impatient folks who do not want to wait for the car to hit their local showroom floors. Businesses in Europe and the UK are currently advertising imported JDM Nissan GT-Rs for sale. Nissan has issued a message that they intend to crack down on these businesses as this venture is a violation of trademark rights. It seems that some have already received paperwork from Nissan's lawyers. The automaker also wants to inform customers in the European Economic Area (EEA) that they have not consented to the sale of the GT-R by these individuals. JDM GT-Rs may not meet safety and emissions standards outside of Japan, so Nissan must detach themselves from any responsibility in case of uneducated buyers.

Hit the jump to view the full press release.

Autoblog: GM recalling over 300,000 vehicles

Filed under: Convertibles, Sedans/Saloons, Recalls/TSBs, Safety, Crossovers/CUVs, Cadillac, GM, Pontiac, Saturn

After seeing a variety of reports cropping up this afternoon, we were finally able to get some hard information regarding a recall that's affecting 313,000 passenger vehicles and crossovers from General Motors.

The recall involves a seal on the rear axle pinion that's apparently prone to leaking, which has the possibility of locking the driven wheels and causing a loss of control. GM will be recalling 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS models, STS sedans and SRX crossovers, as well as the 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and it's platform sibling the 2007 Saturn Sky. All told, that's 275,936 vehicles in the U.S., along with around 38,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Asia.

Autoblog: Pininfarina plugs in, will build electric cars

Being an independent design house is a tough business these days. You've got to diversify by designing things other than cars like desks. You also have to take on the odd job of developing one-off supercars for wealthy gearheads. And you also have to invest your money wisely. The Turin-based design house Pininfarina has announced that it will be taking some of its money and investing it in a joint-venture with French battery manufacturer Bolloré to produce electric cars. The €150 million project will be owned 50-50 by the two companies and draw on Pininfarina's design and manufacturing abilities and Bollore's advanced lithium-ion battery technology. While we have no idea what the car will look like, chances are pretty good it will be stunning in the Italian tradition of car design. We also know it will have four seats and a range of 250 kilometers or 155 miles of city driving. Bolloré's special batteries can be charged fully from a home outlet in 5 hours, or a five-minute charge will offer a little over 15 miles of range. The unnamed car will reportedly be sold in Europe, the U.S. and Japan beginning in 2010 with an annual production run of 15,000 per year. Yeah, we think it's a pretty ambitious plan, too.

Autoblog: Got a Ford F-Series? Better follow the rules...

Filed under: Trucks/Pickups, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Ford

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Ford_gets_viral_with_BFT_video_campaign'; If you roll in a Ford truck, you'd best be aware of the rules. If you violate 'em, the BFT patrol will be all over your case like stink on a monkey. And if you've been to the zoo, you know how monkeys stink. It's not good. BFT, as you might have surmised, stands for Built Ford Tough, and the rules detail activities and things that don't jibe with the image the F-Series projects. They include No Puny Dogs; No Scooters; No Manicures; No Cutesy Cell Phone Rings; No Fancy Coffee; and No Liquid Wrench, among others. Ford has helpfully provided a website that details individual violations captured on video by camera crews traveling with BFT cops. Case #073, above, documents a fancy coffee violator, while Case #235 (embedded after the jump) is an action-filled segment featuring a manicure infraction. We expect to see additional case videos added over time.

If you're driving, say, an F-250 4x4 with a pair of Vespas in the bed, a caramel macchiato in the cupholder, a Yorkshire Terrier in the passenger seat, and a BK Veggie in a take-out bag, we'd expect to see you get chased down, tased, "softened up" a bit, and probably locked up for 20 years without parole. If your Hannah Montana ringtone goes off at any point during all this, we fear that BFT would then be forced to get medieval on you. Consider yourselves warned.
