Autoblog: 2007 Holiday Sweepstakes Day 3: Automoblox Complete Set

It's not an Autoblog Holiday Sweepstakes without a complete set of Automoblox heirloom-quality toy cars as a prize. Thankfully, Automoblox has stepped up once again and is donating a complete set of Automoblox toy cars, which includes six full-size cars, as well as three of the new Automoblox Mini cars. Unfortunately the high-performance models we told you about a few weeks ago are in such high demand that they're not available for this sweepstakes, so you'll have to get those on your own. Keep in mind, each standard Automoblox retails for $34.99, and the winner will get all six, plus a pack of Minis! Just keep telling yourself that you're entering for the kids.

How to Enter: Just leave a single comment on this post (if you leave two or more, all will be disqualified).Simple Rules:
 • 1 winner will be randomly selected at 12:00PM EST Thursday, 12/13/07
 • You may enter today's sweepstakes only once
 • Only residents of the United States are eligible
 • You must be at least 18 to enter
Click here to view official rules and come back every day this week around noon to see what else we're giving away. Happy Holidays from your friendly neighborhood Autoblog!

NOTE: We have already randomly chosen 5 winners for yesterday's sweepstakes and will be in contact with them shortly. Feel free to enter today's sweepstakes if you're eligible, and if you happen to be a previous Holiday Sweepstakes winner, your entry in today's sweepstakes will automatically not count.

Autoblog: GM's Bob Lutz may retire in 2010

Sending the Chevrolet Volt into production might be the last effort of GM's Vice Chairman for Global Product Development, Bob Lutz. The 75-year-old executive has stated that he would like to retire from the automotive giant once they get a plug-in electric vehicle on the market (nevermind that they already had one with the EV1). While a precise date of retirement has not been set, it will possibly occur sometime in 2010. Since Lutz has been one of GM's main champions of the Volt, it is no surprise that he wants to be around for its release. The only worry on his part is the potential for health issues to arise or the chance that the board of directors could decide to move on to a younger team of executives.

Autoblog: Pics Aplenty: Aston Martin serious about V12 Vantage RS

Filed under: Concept Cars, Detroit Auto Show, Coupes, Supercars, Aston Martin

click above image for big high-res gallery of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS

The Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS we told you about yesterday is the real deal. Though officially referred to as a "Performance Concept Car" during its debut at the opening of Aston Martin's new design center yesterday, it's fully functional like all of Aston's concepts and Ulrich Bez, the automaker's CEO, said if the interest is there, they'll build it. We don't know about you, but we're pretty interested in a 3,527-lbs. car with a race-derived V12 motor producing 600bhp. Performance for the car has been conservatively quoted as 4.0 seconds to 62 mph and 8.5 seconds to 100 mph.

Today we can better analyze the design of the V12 Vantage RS thanks to a bevy of high-res images released by Aston Martin this morning. What would you call that color, Cornflower or Baby Blue? Either way, we're not big fans of it for softening the demeanor of this British-born supercar. Despite that, the rest of the Vantage's already gorgeous exterior gets down to business with new carbon fiber pieces for the hood and trunk lid, as well as enough louvers on the bonnet to cool a nuclear reactor. A carbon fiber chin spoiler keeps things steady at high speed and out back the V12 Vantage RS has also been fitted with a retractable spoiler. The interior has also been wrapped entirely in grippy suede, including the heavily-bolstered though comfortable-looking seats.

What we love about the V12 Vantage RS is that it's not just a hat-tip to the recently defunct V12 Vanquish. It is its own car, and a fierce one at that. Though development of the car likely began before Aston Martin had been sold by Ford, we're glad the new owners didn't kill this concept to save some money.

Check out Aston Martin's official press release after the jump.

Autoblog: Bertone's emergency plan expected today

Filed under: Euro, Government/Legal, Hirings/Firings, Plants/Manufacturing, Earnings/Financials
Bertone has landed in some very hot water and is facing Italian bankruptcy court within a week. The courts in Turin seem to think that the best thing for the company's 1,300 employees would be for it to shut down and go into bankruptcy protection. But before it draws its last breath, the famous Italian carrozzeria has one last trick up its sleeve, which is expected to be revealed later today. The coachbuilder has long since evolved from being the small design house it once was into a major manufacturing facility, with capacity to produce 70,000 cars each year. But in order to break even, it needs to build at least 30,000 per year. It was building a special-edition MINI, but that ended over a year ago, and production of the Astra convertible ended two years ago. Over the last three years, according to reports, Bertone has lost €37.3 million ($55.4 million).
Industry insiders are speculating as to what Bertone's plan of action might entail, fueled by a release from chairman, CEO and owner Lili Bertone, which stated that the company received "a letter of intent from an industrial group with a strong track record in the automotive field." That hardly narrows it down, but speculation points towards former Fiat and Telecom Italia exec Gianmario Rossignolo, who is tipped to be preparing to produce a new SUV in Italy. We'll just have to wait and see.

Autoblog: GM scores 4 of 6 finalists in North American OTY awards

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, GM
Last year General Motors swept the 2007 North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards, with both the Saturn Aura and Chevy Silverado taking home the honors. It looks as if the General has a good shot at repeating last year's sweep with news that four of the six finalists for the 2008 awards are GM vehicles.

The finalists for the 2007 North American Car of the Year award are the Cadillac CTS, Chevy Malibu and Honda Accord, while the truck finalists include the Buick Enclave, Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and the Mazda CX-9. These six vehicles were picked from a lot of 54 new models that went on sale this year, and the winners will be announced on January 13th at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The judging panel includes some 50 automotive journalists, including our own contributor John McElroy, who wrote about judging the vehicles in a previous Autoline on Autoblog report.

We're curious to know which car and truck you think is going to win this year, so feel free to vote in our poll below.

Autoblog: What we want for Christmas: Haynes Build Your Own Engine kit

The opportunity to piece together an internal combustion engine is not something one stumbles upon too often, since access to an auto shop class or garage with the necessary tools is unavailable to most people. Also, the expensive consequences of a bad engine build frequently prevent curious newbies from making an attempt on their own. On the other hand, some folks just don't want to get dirty. That's why Haynes, the publisher of many automotive service manuals, has introduced the internal combustion engine kit. Marketed towards kids, or just the kid in you, they offer a plastic model kit to piece together a realistic, working engine. It apparently even features sounds, light-producing spark plugs and moving pistons. The engine has a completed footprint of 7.1 inches in height by 10.6 inches in width and 5.5 inches in depth -- not too big and more educational than the animated .gifs on HowStuffWorks.com. The Haynes UK site shows that popular demand has currently put the kits out of stock. Sadly, we must wait until 2008 for our next coffee table centerpiece project.

Autoblog: Autoblog Podcast #82

Filed under: Concept Cars, Detroit Auto Show, Podcasts, Spy Photos, Coupes, Hybrids/Alternative, SUVs, Trucks/Pickups, Crossovers/CUVs, Chevrolet, Dodge, HUMMER, Hyundai
new-ab-podcast_logo_flata_200.jpg
We tried to get it going for last week, but John had violence visited upon his mouth which reduced him to saying "Spibit?" We're back on the podcast horse this week for Autoblog Podcast #82, though. We start off proceedings with the teaser pic of the Chevy Volt, which then takes us to a wider-ranging split-grille vs. three bar smackdown. Speaking of teasing pictures, the 2009 Dodge Ram showed up on the internets, and it turns out that Chrysler broke their own embargo by mistake. Whoops. Official pictures of an upcoming Mopar were also released, this time on purpose. Some minimally informative macro shots of the Challenger SRT-8 were released by Chrysler, much to our delight. Moving on, we touch on the looming cage match between the Hyundai Genesis coupe (and how quickly the tuner world is going to adopt and rock that platform) and the neo-ponycars. Speaking of a newcomer challenging the old guard, Hummer's HX made its mug known, and the concept is pretty much what you'll see when the H4 goes gunning at the Wrangler. Wrapping it up, we discuss some recent visitors to the Autoblog Garage, thoroughly eviscerating the Lancer ES before calling it a show. Since we took a week off, we give you the extra-value duration of 53:30. Enjoy!

Autoblog: Enter the Rumormill: Ferrari 599 roadster and F149

Filed under: Convertibles, Sports/GTs, Supercars, Ferrari

The internet, as usual, is rife with speculation. Today's source is the FerrariChat message forum, where members claim to have inside information on two new Ferrari models that are anticipated for launch within the next couple of years.
The news concerns a convertible version of the current 599 GTB Fiorano, an illustration of which you see above (courtesy of AutoGespot). FChat member "supraman55" says his local dealer confirmed the upcoming model for a debut at either Detroit or Geneva in 2009. Speculation surrounding the 599 Spider is backed up by an interview with Ferrari's General Director, Amadeo Felisa, which appeared recently in the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. When asked about a convertible 599, Felisa confirmed that Ferrari is developing such a model for possible production in a limited series like its predecessor, the 575-based SuperAmerica. We'll add our own fuel to the fire by speculating that, based on traditional Ferrari nomenclature revived for the 599 GTB, the roadster will likely carry the 599 GTS designation, perhaps married to another name to replace Fiorano for the open-air version.

Autoblog: Enter the Rumormill: Lexus developing lightweight, 429-hp IS-F/R

FiveAxis Lexus IS-F at the 2007 LA Auto Show
When Lexus set out to target the likes of the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63 AMG with its spankin' new IS-F, they weren't kidding. The V8 super-sedan turned out to be an astonishing departure for the Japanese luxury brand that cut its teeth on rock-solid reliability and luxurious comfort. Not content resting on its laurels, rumors are surfacing that Toyota is hard at work preparing an even more extreme variant, being dubbed in the motoring press as the IS-F/R.
Reports have Lexus tweaking an extra 12 horsepower and 4 lb-ft of torque out of the Yamaha-sourced 417-hp/372 lb-ft, 5.0-liter V8 for an increased output of 429 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. A modest increase, it would seem, until you look at the targeted 220-lb weight reduction. And as we all know, a little more power unburdened by significantly less weight is a winning formula. Just ask the likes of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Lamborghini Gallardo SUperleggera, Porsche 911 GT2 et al.
The rumored price of admission? A whopping 11 million yen in Japan, compared to the 7.7 million yen for what suddenly looks by comparison like a rather ordinary "standard" IS-F. Pursuit of Perfection, indeed.

Autoblog: Sacré Bleu! Peugeot to build the 308 RC-Z

Filed under: Concept Cars, Frankfurt Auto Show, Coupes, Euro, Peugeot

The 308 RC-Z concept was unveiled just a few months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show and showed the world what the French automaker can do with the 308's new platform, all the while teasing us with its arrogant air of production feasibility. If the buzz around the French motoring press is to be believed - and we certainly hope it is - Peugeot has decided to put the shapely 308 RC-Z concept into production. Magnifique!
The TT-esque 2+2 is based on the underpinnings of the 308 hatchback but with some revised bodywork, including lines highly reminiscent of Audi coupés (that's a good thing). While the show car used the 218-hp turbo four out of the race-prepped 207 RC, the production version could offer any number of powertrain options to our lucky friendsacross the pond.
Insiders expect the production 308 RC-Z, tipped to be built by Magna in Austria, to hit the French countryside sometime in 2009. We'll start saving our Air France air miles to check it out now.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/television/Knight_Rider_s_new_K_I_T_T_unveiled_OFFICIAL_Pics_2'; NBC held a press conference today officially announcing the return of Knight Rider to network TV. The new show will debut as a two-hour movie on February 17th with a cast that includes Justin Bruening, Deanna Russo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier and Bruce Davison. Also confirmed is the return of David Hasselhoff in the role of an elder Michael Knight. Finally, the character we care about most, KITT, has been officially confirmed as a Ford GT500KR. The voice of KITT will also be none other than Will Arnett, husband of Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler and ex-alum of the TV show Arrested Development.

There will actually be three versions of KITT in the show: a 540-hp standard version of the character named KITT Hero, a super high-speed version that's heavily modified for combat called KITT Attack (click here to view his body changes), and a driverless version called KITT Remote. According to NBC, KITT in the modern era is a supercomputer capable of hacking anything that plugs into a wall, and thanks to progress made in the area of nanotechnology, its body can shift both its shape and color.

Follow the jump for the official press release from NBC, including a brief rundown of the premier's storyline.

Autoblog: GM, Lambo and Lancia to headline 2008 Pebble Beach Concours

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has garnered a reputation as the paramount classic car event in the United States. Each year the event honors selected manufacturers with featured marque displays. When the annual event rolls around on August 17, 2008 three distinctive automakers will get their time in the spotlight. Lamborghini and Lancia, both Italian brands, will show off their homeland's significant influence on automotive history. General Motors will also celebrate their 100th year with a presence at the Concours. Many of GM's revolutionary concepts, prototypes and sports cars will scatter the golf course grounds. In particular vehicles from the GM Motorama road show will be on display along with the Cadillac V-16. Also it is certain that no classic car show with a beach location in California can forgo a display of GM Woodies.

Autoblog: Sound Decision: Aston Martin signs deal with Bang & Olufsen

Filed under: Audio, Gadgets, Sports/GTs, Aston Martin
Yesterday was a big news day for Aston Martin. The small, independent automaker with a line-up based on just two models opened its new design center, unveiled the V12 Vantage RS, confirmed that the DBS would continue as Bond's ride in the next 007 movie, and announced a new partnership with Bang & Olufsen. As a result of the new deal, the premium Danish electronics company will supply the British sportscar maker with special audio systems for its upcoming models. Expecting a virtual symphony to be recreated in the upcoming Rapide, then, would be a safe bet.
B&O, which bears no relation to the Atlantic City railroad station on your Monopoly board, already has a similar relationship with Audi, and was expected to announce a partnership with another automaker sometime soon. In anticipation, the company's stock rose over the course of several days, but fell again following the announcement that the deal was struck with Aston Martin and not with a larger manufacturer.
Good for Aston then, less so for Olufsen.

Autoblog: 2009 Skoda Superb flagship to bow at Geneva

Although the Volkswagen Group brands that sell in the United States (namely Volkswagen and Audi) tend to keep their respective platforms to themselves - almost to a fault - in foreign markets the German automaker rebadges and rebodies the same cars under several different labels. Skoda is one such brand, and its flagship sedan, called Superb, is due for replacement. And that's just what the Czech carmaker is preparing to unveil at the Geneva show next March.
What you see above is the second-generation Skoda Superb, based on the current (fifth-generation) Volkswagen Passat and stretched some. Details and additional pictures haven't yet been released, but Skoda promises it'll incorporate many "smart solutions", including an anticipated creative approach to the hatchbach-trunk debate.

Autoblog: Infiniti to put new kind of hybrid in FX

One of the knocks against hybrids is that they're best around town, but once you get on the highway, it's back to full-time fossil fuels. Nissan is developing its own hybrid tech that it plans to launch in the Infiniti FX, in which the electric component will assist the engine at highway speeds as well, not just around town.

We don't know how close, if at all, it will be to the hybrid system in the Porsche Cayenne -- that (as-yet-untested) one can run the vehicle entirely on electric power at 75 MPH. Nissan's offering is slated to arrive some time in the next decade, presumably in the next generation FX. When it does, that will put at least four different types of major manufacturer hybrids on the roads, making their way through streets also littered with clean diesels. When we get that kind of concentration, the shakeout will really begin to decide who'll win the altpower war.

Autoblog: Spy shots: Production Camaro sans Zebra stripes

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Spy Photos, Coupes, Chevrolet, GM
camaro-in-buff.jpg

camaro-concept.jpg
Since the original Camaro concept hit NAIAS in January 2006, it seems like we've been living with (and writing about) the pony coupe forever. The fact is, we still haven't seen the Camaro's final production duds. While the official unveiling at Detroit is still a month away, the Camaro5 website has posted on its forums a near-naked Chevy Pony car in production sheet metal. The front and rear are wearing padded underwear, but we can see from the side-view pic that the basic shape stays true to the stunning concepts of 2006 and 2007.
Missing are the three slotted vents ahead of the rear wheel wells, but it looks like some ribbed metal takes its place. Also history are the funky-cool but slightly impractical side mirrors from the concept cars, and unlike the concept, the production model has a B-pillar. While it's difficult to tell for certain with the flat white paint job and slightly blurry photography, it appears as though some of the hard edges of the concept's belt-line have been softened. Judging by the high-polish 18- or 19-inch rims on this pre-production model, it's as close to final as we're going to see before the RWD coupe starts rolling off the assembly line. Without seeing the front and back of the Camaro, it's tough to gauge how closely GM stuck to the design of the concept, but from this one picture, it looks pretty close. We'll know more as we get closer to NAIAS next month.
Thanks for the tip, Mark!

Autoblog: What to do when your Porsche gets stuck in the snow

Filed under: Gadgets, Etc., Euro, Porsche

If you live in a snowy, wintry climate, Porsche has no shortage of options available to you. Between the 911 Carrera 4 and the Cayenne sport-utility, there's no reason you should get stuck in the snow. But if your choice ride from Stuttgart is, say, a Boxster, or you just happen to get stuck in a snowbank anyway, never fear, for Porsche has exactly what you need.
alu-l[1].jpg
The imaginatively-named Porsche Aluminiumschlitten (at right) is a grown-up bobsled made of aluminum. It folds up into a handy carrying case (that will, we hope, fit into a Cayman's luggage compartment), and rides on high-grade stainless steel skids.
The Porsche Kinderbob (pictured above) meanwhile, is, as you might have guessed, more for the kids. It features a decidedly racy design with space for one, handlebars for steering and even a horn for passing in the fast lane down the toboggan run.
Kinderbob sells in Germany for €65, the Aluminiumschlitten for a more substantial €250. Just in time for Weihnachten.

Autoblog: "Cool Stuff" from Audi coming to the U.S.

Audi's given the A4 an S-Line package for European consumption, and they're pledging that the US won't get stiffed when the fifth-generation A4 lands in America in late 2008. The German word for sport is, uh, sport, and the S-line bits can appease S4 aspirants without the heavy outlay for the über-performing version of the A4. Inside Line has been assured by Audi USA's Christian Bokich that they "won't hold back on the cool stuff from Germany," meaning you won't have to hunt down esoteric Euro part numbers for the bits you really want; nor will you have to go at your Audi with hand tools to get something a little special.

For about $3,000, European buyers will get a lowered suspension by Quattro GmbH, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, sport seats, special perforated Alcantara and leather, and different accents for the leather wrapped sport steering wheel. While the interior execution will be Audi sumptuous, it certainly won't make the car any sportier or faster. The bolsters on the sport seats are likely to be more snug-fitting, but what it sounds like, the main value is in the Quattro GmbH suspension which would probably be hard to duplicate for a mere $3K aftermarket. The extra finery is de rigeur in this segment, lest you forget you're driving an uprated car.

What do a federal judge in California and Paris Hilton have in common? They both like cleaner cars. Yesterday, a lawsuit brought by the nation's automakers was thrown out, which should pave the way for California to regulate tailpipe emissions. Also, Paris says she's "buying a hybrid car right now." I guess it's just that easy for some people. In the video above, you can watch "naked streets," but it's not nearly as exciting as you might think.

Autoblog: Wards announces "Ten Best Engines" list for 2007

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Top_Ten_Engines_of_2007'; It's that time of year for all the end of year awards and top ten lists to surface, but Ward's always brings something different to the table. Rather than pick out the best car or truck that was new this year, the automotive trade journal picks the ten best engines, and this year it focused on motors that manage to balance the competing demands of more power and more fuel economy.

Click the name of any engine below to view, or tour the Ten Best Engines list in our gallery.

The real question is whether or not you think Ward's got its "Ten Best Engines" list right? What engines are missing, or more importantly, which ones don't deserve to be included? You can read our opinion after the jump and leave your own in the comments.
