So what is Detailing?
The detailing phrase originates in from the US. Car valeting is known as detailing.

However in the Rest of World, detailing has been recognised as taking valeting to a higher level of coverage and quality of finish. A professional Detailer will provide a quality of finish that will last for months, remove paint and interior defects and impart enough knowledge to allow you to maintain the finish and avoid reintroducing the defects.

What constitutes a ‘detail’?

A typical detail (timings are approximate and vary on car type and condition)
  • Inner arches cleaned and degreased. (20 mins)
  • Wheels cleaned (40 mins)
  • Exhaust cleaned and polished (5 mins)
  • Body work washed (20 mins)
  • Interior vacuumed, cleaned and protected (1 hour)
  • Engine bay cleaned, degreased and sealed. (30 mins)
  • Exterior claybared, including glass (1 hour)
  • Exterior paint cleansing (25 mins)
  • If required, exterior paint polishing (swirl and scratch removal) (2-3 hours)
  • Exterior paint sealing/waxing (1.5 hours)
  • Exterior rubbers and vinyl restored and sealed. (10 mins)
  • All glass work polished and protected. (15 mins)
  • Wheels waxed (20 mins)
  • Tyres dressed (5 mins)
  • Nice cold beer ( 2 mins) :beer-fresh:

A high standard detail can take anything between six and twelve hours. I have performed 2 and 3 day details depending on the level of finish.

The key to a good finish is all in the preparation. Surface cleansing brings the best platform to work the detailing magic on. It allows the polishing to provide the maximum cutting (appropriate level) and polishing ability in preparation for sealing.

Although there is much focus on the high-end waxes from the like of Swissol and Zymol their contribution is based on the surface preparation.

Good preparation can provide results like these
