LONDON (Reuters) - The M1 motorway was shut near London on Thursday after a major crash involving a coach, a tanker and eight other vehicles which left one man dead.

The carriageway was closed northbound between junctions 1 and 5 just north of the capital after the accident in Hertfordshire at around 4:00 a.m.
Police, who said the road was likely to be closed for hours, said one man died and another is in hospital with serious injuries.
Another 50 people were said to be "walking wounded" while 15 suffered minor injuries.
"The closures are likely to last until about 4 or 5 o'clock this afternoon so we are advising motorists to avoid the M1 and surrounding roads," said a spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Police.
