If someone did that to my Business, I would be a bit brassed off with them to say the least!

Yeah, but if you waste a couple of grand as tea boy you get fired, waste a couple of billions at the top and you get at least £5 million to go away.
Once of the more senior people at a previous company I worked at got paid enough to retire, all through making serious strategic errors.

At the top, financial reward comes through incompetance.
I am to make it to the top then screw up massively. A tried and tested route to retirement.
